I'm new to this field and as a stranger, looking at the website for the first time, I can't see the answer to what seems an obvious first question - what does FIWARE mean? is it an acronym, and if so what does it stand for?

It is an analogy. You have software, hardware .... and FIWARE! :) The beginning "FI" stands for "Future Internet"
