How to use all the disk space in my VM

I've created a VM supposedly having 20 GB of disk. Nevertheless, a df -h command shows only 8 GB. Where are the other 12 GB? I've heard something about mounting a volume. Please, guide me. Thanks.

Anyway, such behavior seems to come from creating instances from legacy (old) images which use is discouraged.
